A completely self-contained portable instrument, inspired by a design from the 18th-century instrument maker Peter Dollond, founder of a great Optical empire - the original of which is in the London Science Museum. Instruments like this were once used by explorers and navigators to tell the time anywhere in the world. For this to be possible, The gnomon, which casts the shadow, can be set for latitude on a sliding scale and the whole instrument oriented for direction by means of a magnetic compass in the base. Height adjustable legs ensure that the instrument is used upright.

Stumpy little steam-powered cargo ships like these were once a familiar sight around the West Coast of Scotland, providing an essential supply link ferrying goods and coal around the islands - their flat bottoms allowing them to the beach and unload in places that lacked suitable Piers. Although only a handful remains in service today, they are instantly recognized and much loved thanks largely to the short stories by Neil Munro about Vital spark and her Captain Para handy.

This distinctive compass paperweight features a bold glass dome that serves to magnify the compass card inside and an antique effect brass case engraved with the phrase ‘A Journey of a Thousand Miles Must Begin with a Single Step’. Diameter 4".

Barrels were used aboard sailing ships to store and preserve provisions, including water, salted meat and (most importantly!) rum. This barrel-style moneybox is made from solid polished hardwood (not plywood or MDF), with brass banding. A screwed flap at the bottom allows access to the precious contents.

Aboard HMS Beagle during the Darwin Expeditions of 1831-36, Captain Robert Fitzroy developed and refined the 18th-century storm bottle. This involved much testing and observation of crystal formations and resulted in him being able to make a number of weather predictions with a fair(is) degree of accuracy. Then, as now, no one is quite sure how the storm bottle works. Is it atmospheric pressure, temperature, electrical disturbances? Keep your own records and see if you can confirm or improve upon Fitzroy’s observations.

This brass pocket sundial is a completely self-contained portable instrument, with a compass for alignment and lid for protection. The gnomon is set for latitudes around 50 Degrees north, so will be most accurate in the south of England, northern Europe, Canada and so on. At these latitudes, this is a functioning time indicator (in as much as sundials ever were!).

These curious and mesmerising instruments measure the power of electromagnetic radiation. Made from a glass bulb with much of the air removed to form a partial vacuum, inside is a set of fine metal vanes, each with one dark and one light side, mounted on a spindle. The vanes rotate, as if by magic when exposed to sunlight, artificial light, or infrared radiation (even the heat of a hand nearby can be enough) – the more intense the light, the faster the rotation.

The Royal Naval rum was measured in half-gill tots and variously diluted, often into a two-gill (half-pint) measure. Their measures are made in a time-honored way - from skilfully hand-beaten brass, copper-plated, polished, then lined with silver to neutralize the taste. The bases are stamped with the prestigious HMS logo. One supplied. Not gift boxed. Height 2".

Our Titanic Whistle has been specially engraved to commemorate the 100 Years since the tragic event back in when Titanic sank - losing over 1500 lives. Authentic replica of the whistle used by Titanic's First Mate, as used so dramatically in the film to facilitate Kate Winslet's rescue. Named in tribute to the world-famous clipper Cutty Sark, this antique-finish brass compass has an engraving of the globe on the underside cantering particularly on Australia, the destination for Cutty Sark on many occasions to bring wool and other cargo back to England. This short-draw telescope is well balanced making it light and easy to use. Its 2.5x magnification makes it great for quick enlargement of things relatively close by, such as ships in a harbor, rather than high magnification, long-distance work where a much longer, and thus heavier telescope would be required. Solid brass leather-bound telescope presented in a polished wooden box with brass inlay corners and anchor motif. Telescope extends to 7", box measures 5x2.5".

It is said that Admiral Sir Francis Drake, on hearing of the approach of the Spanish Armada, refused to set sail with the British fleet until he had finished his game of bowls on Plymouth Hoe. The truth was that the tide was wrong so they couldn't leave - but it makes a great store! (Later, when conditions were right, he defeated the Armada by sailing burning ships into their fleet.) their mini carpet set is a smaller version for playing in the living room. Each bowl is 2" In diameter, supplied in a storage box. Set consists of eight colour-coded bowls and a jack, all made from injection-moulded plastic.
