Cotton Tapestries & Hangings

William Morris' use of birds and animals in his early tapestries is a forebear to his later carpet patterns. This home decor design, one of his most successful compositions, uses a dense cover of trailing acanthus leaves, as seen in his first tapestry 'Acanthus and Vine', into which have been placed Philip Webb's five studies of animals and birds. It is possible that Henry Dearle supplied foreground floral details, although these are similar to Webb's preparatory drawings. Lady with Fan, also known as the woman with the fan was painted by Gustav Klimt in 1917. The Lady wears a kimono and fan in the Japanese style, and figures reminiscent of oriental tapestry grace the perspectiveless background in a wall tapestry. Klimt’s work borrows heavily from the Symbolist, Impressionist, and Art Nouveau movements, and all of those influences can be seen in Lady with Fan. It is an excellent example of the Serpents de Mer series, which made extensive use of the female form made it sinuous and flowing. Here, Klimt makes the women into mysterious, mermaid-like creatures.
