Breathe Framed Art

A portrait by an old master that's been given a minimalist new twist. This playful parody of a 15th-century painting cloaks the subject in total darkness so that all that's left is a pair of praying hands. The original portrait that this piece is based on is an anonymous portrait from the 15th century. Artists Young and Battaglia have added a further level of mystery to the painting - by removing everything from the image except the hands. While this is certainly a pastiche art canvas, it's still rather thought-provoking. It invites us to use our imaginations and conjure up our own ideas. What does the rest of the picture look like? Is the person sitting in darkness out of sight, or have they disappeared completely? What sort of an expression is the missing person wearing - and what about their outfit? By using our mind's eye we can have a different person in the frame each time we look at it - so this piece of quirky wall art will never lose your interest.

Sad photos can afford a profound opportunity for interpretation, is she sad? is she sleepy? Is it a look of forlornness or heartbreak? The title could allow our interpretation to be guided somewhat, ‘The Moment of Change is the Only Poem’ perhaps the book she holds she hoped held the answers to questions she had. Questions about change, progression, discovery. So maybe the book is a book of poems that never held the answers and in a period of disconsolation with the book slipping away from her hands, the pages drift away and destroy themselves as redundant articles. Is the answer to her worries only to be found in the feelings and transitions within change? Alternatively, it is a picture with her dog?
