Motivated by a revolutionary spirit, Spode creates modern collections whilst keeping its unique British heritage alive. Josiah Spode I (1733-1797) founded Spode in 1770 in the heart of a thriving, industrial Stoke-on-Trent, the birthplace of the British ceramic industry. A true craftsman, it was Josiah who brought to perfection a commercially successful method of manufacturing blue and white ceramics (known as blue under-glaze printing), and it was his son and partner, Josiah II, who developed a flawless formula for fine bone china. Today, from its studio and factory in Stoke-on-Trent, Spode creates elegant pieces that evoke a sense of calm and nostalgia. Each one of its tableware, serveware and glassware collections has a link between the past and the modern day – modern patterns with a uniquely classic and timeless feel is what Spode does, and what it does well. The Spode backstamp is a promise that its collections have not only been produced using the finest materials, but have also met the highest standards of quality and design – a standard Spode is proud to live up to and has done since 1770.
